Call it larceny. Jay Higgins sat on the board until pick No. 194, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.

If Mukuba pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Will Johnson · CB · rank 2
In the 14th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 16
In the Round 1 slot they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Emery Jones · OT · rank 33
Emery Jones at pick No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.13 · Pick 45 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 34
Tyler Booker in pick 45 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Jonah Savaiinaea · OT · rank 37
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 58th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Mitchell Evans · TE · rank 66
Mitchell Evans at No. 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 129
A big swing on Aireontae Ersery at slot 78, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.18 · Pick 82 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 55
Elic Ayomanor at Round 3, Pick 18 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.2 · Pick 98 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 156
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.18 · Pick 114 · CJ Daniels · WR · rank 146
CJ Daniels at Round 4, Pick 18 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.2 · Pick 130 · Jalen Milroe · QB · rank 54
Somehow Jalen Milroe was still sitting there in pick No. 130, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.2 · Pick 194 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 89
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to the 194th pick, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
