Nobody else had Jaheim Oatis anywhere near pick No. 194. The Patriots did, by 41 spots, and that gap is the whole story. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Sawyer falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
In No. 26 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Booker at pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A conviction pick on Ashton Jeanty at pick No. 39 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Quincy Riley at slot 58, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jack Sawyer in Round 3, Pick 2 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Mitchell Evans at the 71st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Oscar Delp, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 2. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Andrew Mukuba at slot 130 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Jaheim Oatis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
