The rest of the league had time to spare on CJ Daniels; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 45 spots ahead at pick 130. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 24 they get a building block for the line, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Booker at slot 34 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Nwankpa at the 39th pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quincy Riley in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oscar Delp in the 88th overall pick, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on Tyler Warren in No. 98, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into CJ Daniels at the 130th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaeden Roberts in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Oronde Gadsden II in pick 194 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
