Nobody else had CJ Daniels anywhere near the 130th pick. The Patriots did, by 45 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Hampton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Will Campbell in No. 7, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emery Jones. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Booker in the 35th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Omarion Hampton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Andrew Mukuba at pick 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sonny Styles at No. 71 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Emmanwori in pick No. 98, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, CJ Daniels well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
