There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for CJ Daniels, 44 picks ahead of schedule.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. However the rest shakes out, Ersery at that price is a win they earned.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Jonah Savaiinaea in Round 2, Pick 2 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
A reach on Quincy Riley in pick 58; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Nick Emmanwori at the 98th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Aireontae Ersery, who had no business lasting to slot 122. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Bryson Nesbit at the 130th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; CJ Daniels in No. 131 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Dylan Fairchild, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
