The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 220th overall pick on Lorenzo Styles Jr. a full 183 spots early.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Ersery that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Quincy Riley in the 63rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, Sonny Styles in pick 64 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Luke Kandra in No. 98; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Oscar Delp. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Aireontae Ersery still on the board at the Round 5 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
CJ Daniels at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jack Kiser at slot 194 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached into another round for Lorenzo Styles Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
