Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Tre Harris, the No. 35 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 194.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Joe Alt leading the way.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In the end it comes back to Malaki Starks, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th pick they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Colston Loveland in No. 40 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ashton Gillotte in pick 98 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Sonny Styles in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Tre Harris at slot 194 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; J.C. Davis at the 195th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
