Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Ashton Gillotte, the No. 35 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 120. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
In the end it comes back to Malaki Starks, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
Nice patience on Malaki Starks, who had no business lasting to pick No. 26. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Travis Hunter at pick 41 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board fumbled Colston Loveland all the way to the 55th pick, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kenneth Grant in Round 3, Pick 2 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Quinshon Judkins in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Sonny Styles in No. 91 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Oscar Delp in the 98th overall pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Ashton Gillotte here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They did well to land Aireontae Ersery in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Damien Martinez at No. 130 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
