The Patriots put a flag in the ground for CJ Daniels, 37 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Joe Alt leading the way. However the rest shakes out, Sturdivant at that price is a win they earned.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Xavier Nwankpa at par in pick 34, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid a round early for Oscar Delp in pick No. 62, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyler Warren in slot 85, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nick Emmanwori this early at the 87th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Aireontae Ersery at the 94th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They read the board right and J. Michael Sturdivant was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 5. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
CJ Daniels at pick 152 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
