When a board-topper like Tyrone Tracy Jr. slides to pick 180, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
Reaching for Mahogany left real value on the table behind him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
You do not let an offensive lineman like JC Latham reach the 34th overall pick and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Jonathon Brooks was still sitting there in pick 66, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Christian Mahogany at slot 68 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid up for Trey Benson at pick No. 71 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
They jumped the gun on Spencer Rattler, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Mason McCormick in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They robbed the room for Tyrone Tracy Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Brandon Coleman is a better player than the 193rd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ryan Flournoy in pick No. 231 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
