New England Patriots

DeJean should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a A.

Call it larceny. Cooper DeJean sat on the board until slot 61, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

The Patriots indulged a want in DeJean while a need in edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Rome Odunze and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.29 · Pick 29 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 22
In pick No. 29 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
A reasonable price with a little left over, J.J. McCarthy in No. 35. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 23
The board had Kool-Aid McKinstry higher than the 36th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 61 on Cooper DeJean with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
Xavier Worthy is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 76 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Nothing to complain about; Cade Stover went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 75
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
Jarrian Jones at pick 152 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 164 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
