The Devin Leary pick is the one that will follow the Packers into the fall. They took him 105 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 17 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Denzel Burke in pick No. 62, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Marist Liufau a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach for Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 11; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
They did well to land D.J. James in the 82nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Gabriel Murphy in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Devin Neal at pick No. 111 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Justin Rogers in No. 117, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nothing to complain about; Tykee Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Value said wait; Moose Muhammad III in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Michael Barrett in the 187th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Miles Frazier at Round 6, Pick 13 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 217th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Devin Leary in slot 219 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nelson Ceaser. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Tyreek Chappell in the 230th pick, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Tim Smith at No. 238, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Fair-plus on Joshua Gray, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kenny Logan Jr.. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
