The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Ollie Gordon II, the No. 175 name on the board, sitting there at No. 222 like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Conner to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a load in the middle at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They reached into another round for Zy Alexander, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 58 with a little surplus value in Harold Fannin Jr.. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Kurtis Rourke at the 145th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in Round 6, Pick 7 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Miles Frazier at pick 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Ollie Gordon II still on the board at No. 222. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Seth McLaughlin in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
