Thirty-one other rooms let Chris Paul Jr. slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at pick 220. Highway robbery. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They will need Johnson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tez Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Trey Amos at No. 45 that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Value with a capital V on Dylan Fairchild in slot 69, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Xavier Watts at the 77th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
TreVeyon Henderson in pick 105 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Deontae Lawson in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, Xzavier Henderson in pick No. 217 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 220 is the definition of value, full stop. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Raheim Sanders in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Seth McLaughlin at pick No. 241 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
