Somebody in the 238th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Dominic Zvada, the No. 95 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Every board in the league had Lampkin lower, and that gap is the story.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a blindside protector, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Matthew Golden in No. 37, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Benjamin Morrison at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A straight-up fair deal on Jalen Royals at pick No. 69, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Danny Stutsman in the 77th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at the 104th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Willie Lampkin, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to slot 178, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Jay Higgins in pick 217 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Cam Skattebo at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Dominic Zvada was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 22, and they pounced on premier specialist value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
