Somebody in pick No. 217 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 110 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Kolton Miller pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
They are betting Johnson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector, reach and all.
They took Matthew Golden at par in No. 39, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Zy Alexander at slot 68 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on Tez Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Luke Kandra at Round 4, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at pick No. 143 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Cam Skattebo at the 217th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They let Seth McLaughlin come to them and pounced at the 220th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
