New England Patriots

The Patriots won the night they stopped Zvada from sliding. Grade: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Dominic Zvada had no business being available in the Round 7 slot, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Every board in the league had Burch lower, and that gap is the story. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 15
In No. 12 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 27
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emeka Egbuka at slot 38. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Trey Amos · CB · rank 57
They went early on Trey Amos in the 44th pick, and the value did not follow. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tez Johnson · WR · rank 93
They talked themselves into Tez Johnson at the 69th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 38
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in pick 76, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 108
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Burch in Round 3, Pick 13, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Luke Kandra · OG · rank 105
They paid sticker price for Luke Kandra in pick No. 104, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 85
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R5.11 · Pick 148 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 130
A tight end of that caliber at slot 148 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 120
Jay Higgins at pick No. 217 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Dominic Zvada · PK · rank 95
Dominic Zvada in Round 7, Pick 4 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Corey Kiner · RB · rank 180
They will replay Corey Kiner at the 238th pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
