When a board-topper like Dominic Zvada slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
The cost of the Conner reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Matthew Golden in Round 2, Pick 6 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Benjamin Morrison at No. 45, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
The board fumbled Tyler Warren all the way to the 69th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Tez Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 77. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in pick 104 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at the 143rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Carson Schwesinger at slot 217 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Dominic Zvada in pick No. 220 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Cam Skattebo in pick 232, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Jack Kiser at Round 7, Pick 22 for years; that is how good the value is. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
