Somebody in slot 238 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Dominic Zvada, the No. 95 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Reaching for Johnson left real value on the table behind him.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
They took Matthew Golden at par in the 37th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Benjamin Morrison a notch or two before his time. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Tyler Warren in slot 69 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A conviction pick on Tez Johnson at pick No. 77 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Luke Kandra in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Jay Higgins was still sitting there in the 217th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Carson Schwesinger at the 220th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Dominic Zvada in pick 238 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
