Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Trey Amos got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 223. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Quantity was the play, for better or worse. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
A quiet steal in pick No. 36: Isaiah Bond for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Jahdae Barron was still sitting there in No. 68, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tate Ratledge in slot 88 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Tre Harris in pick 105 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Wyatt Milum at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Bradyn Swinson still on the board at the 142nd pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Malachi Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Amos in the 223rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Deontae Lawson in No. 239 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to the 241st pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
