Call it larceny. Ryan Fitzgerald sat on the board until Round 7, Pick 22, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If Henderson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Matthew Golden in the 38th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jermari Harris at No. 77 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Luke Kandra at the 104th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Danny Stutsman all the way to slot 143, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at Round 7, Pick 1. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xzavier Henderson this early at pick 220. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ryan Fitzgerald at pick 238 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
