Somebody in the 238th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 108 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had Prather lower, and that gap is the story.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Matthew Golden in pick 38 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jermari Harris at Round 3, Pick 13 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
They robbed the room for Dylan Fairchild here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Danny Stutsman at pick No. 143 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They barely believed it either: Jay Higgins still on the board at the 217th overall pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Kaden Prather in the 220th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ryan Fitzgerald in pick 238 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
