New England Patriots

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Patriots and Fitzgerald: B.

You could see the war room lean forward. Ryan Fitzgerald at Round 7, Pick 22 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

The Henderson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 5
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 43
They paid sticker price for Matthew Golden in pick 37, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Benjamin Morrison · CB · rank 45
No drama and no debate, Benjamin Morrison went about where he belonged in the 38th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 52
A slide stopped in No. 69, with Tate Ratledge worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 21
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach pick No. 77 and blink. They did not. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 116
They paid up for Jack Nelson at the 104th pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 80
Taking Barrett Carter in slot 143 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.3 · Pick 178 · Xzavier Henderson · WR · rank 247
Value said wait; Xzavier Henderson in Round 6, Pick 3 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Chris Paul Jr. · LB · rank 115
Circle this one: Chris Paul Jr. at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Rod Moore · S · rank 138
They barely believed it either: Rod Moore still on the board at the 217th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Raheim Sanders · RB · rank 146
Somehow Raheim Sanders was still sitting there in the 220th overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Ryan Fitzgerald · PK · rank 108
They will replay Ryan Fitzgerald at pick 238 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
