New England Patriots

The Patriots let Fitzgerald fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 108 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 244th overall pick. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 5
In the 6th pick they get juice off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Emeka Egbuka graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 83
Donovan Jackson in pick No. 38 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jalen Royals · WR · rank 66
Jalen Royals at No. 69 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Maxwell Hairston · CB · rank 97
They reached into another round for Maxwell Hairston, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Hayden Conner · OG · rank 148
A big swing on Hayden Conner at slot 104, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 84
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at the 143rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.3 · Pick 178 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 121
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jay Higgins in pick 178, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 127
They robbed the room for Carson Schwesinger here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R7.12 · Pick 228 · Xzavier Henderson · WR · rank 247
They reached a country mile for Xzavier Henderson at pick No. 228, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Raheim Sanders · RB · rank 146
They will replay Raheim Sanders at the 238th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.28 · Pick 244 · Ryan Fitzgerald · PK · rank 108
They barely believed it either: Ryan Fitzgerald still on the board at Round 7, Pick 28. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
