Somebody in slot 222 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Damien Martinez, the No. 162 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The Harris reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Matthew Golden in Round 2, Pick 6; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Ezeiruaku. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jermari Harris this early at the 77th pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Tez Johnson at No. 105 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cody Simon at the 145th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Jack Kiser in slot 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
You do not let a running back like Damien Martinez reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Good price on Brant Kuithe in Round 7, Pick 22, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
