Somebody in Round 5, Pick 6 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Jake Majors, the No. 107 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
The Simon reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a blindside protector at fair value.
No edge and no loss on Matthew Golden in pick 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Tre Harris went about where he belonged in No. 44. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nice patience on Josaiah Stewart, who had no business lasting to the 69th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Maxwell Hairston at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cody Simon in pick No. 105 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jake Majors at slot 145 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 7, Pick 1 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Jack Kiser in the 222nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A reach on Jake Briningstool in pick 240; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
