The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched LeQuint Allen slide 69 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Ivey reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Adding Riley Moss by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Matthew Golden in pick 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trey Amos at the 45th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Tre Harris at No. 51 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Jared Ivey in pick No. 69, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Marcus Mbow in the 77th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Carson Schwesinger here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Malachi Moore in slot 121 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cody Simon is a better player than No. 145 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 199 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; LeQuint Allen at the 210th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let a linebacker like Karene Reid reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They barely believed it either: Luke Lachey still on the board at pick No. 222. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Addison West at Round 7, Pick 22 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
