Somebody in pick No. 219 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Damien Martinez, the No. 162 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Just about everything broke right, and the A follows.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

In the end it comes back to Will Campbell, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 11
No edge and no loss on Will Campbell in the 12th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 21
A quiet steal in slot 38: Emeka Egbuka for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kyle Kennard · DE-EDGE · rank 76
Kyle Kennard in pick 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Azareye'h Thomas · CB · rank 62
Azareye'h Thomas at Round 3, Pick 13 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Malachi Moore · S · rank 95
Malachi Moore slipping to the 105th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 136
Cody Simon in pick No. 145 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 185
They jumped the gun on Dont'e Thornton Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Damien Martinez · RB · rank 162
Taking Damien Martinez in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 203
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 4 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Jake Briningstool · TE · rank 248
Jake Briningstool in No. 240 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
