You could see the war room lean forward. Ollie Gordon II at the Round 7 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Every board in the league had Henderson lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The Mondon Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, with Matthew Golden leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Donovan Jackson at slot 38 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Maxwell Hairston at the 61st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
By-the-book stuff, Kyle Kennard at pick 69 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Xavier Restrepo was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 13. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Danny Stutsman at par in No. 79, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Tez Johnson in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in pick No. 128: Smael Mondon Jr. adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots keeps waiting.
No edge and no loss on Mitchell Evans in No. 144; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jack Nelson at slot 217 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Raheim Sanders at pick No. 220 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Xzavier Henderson in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Ollie Gordon II still on the board at Round 7, Pick 29. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
