There is reaching, and then there is Charles Grant at the 44th overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 47 and dared it to prove them wrong.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Nelson. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The veteran additions, Tee Higgins chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Matthew Golden and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value said wait; Charles Grant in the 44th overall pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Kyle Kennard in pick 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zy Alexander in No. 76, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mitchell Evans well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Cody Simon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Malachi Moore for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Seth McLaughlin at the 171st overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Jack Nelson at the 217th pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A running back of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 4 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xzavier Henderson this early at pick No. 238. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
