The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Charles Grant went at pick 45, a good 45 picks before the board was ready. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

In the end it comes back to Matthew Golden, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 13
No drama and no debate, Matthew Golden went about where he belonged in the 14th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Mike Green · DE-EDGE · rank 27
A slide stopped in the 38th pick, with Mike Green worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.13 · Pick 45 · Charles Grant · OT · rank 90
Charles Grant at pick No. 45 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tre Harris · WR · rank 60
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tre Harris at slot 69. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 64
The board had Donovan Jackson higher than No. 77, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
R4.4 · Pick 106 · Zy Alexander · CB · rank 97
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Zy Alexander in the Round 4 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 129
Cody Simon at slot 144 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Jermari Harris · CB · rank 228
They liked Jermari Harris enough to skip the value, taking him in the 217th overall pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Ty Hamilton · DT · rank 252
A wild overpay on Ty Hamilton in pick No. 220, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Xzavier Henderson · WR · rank 277
They reached into another round for Xzavier Henderson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
