When a board-topper like Nicholas Singleton slides to slot 220, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Kandra reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
A slide stopped in pick 38, with Emeka Egbuka worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; Jermari Harris in the 69th overall pick says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke Kandra. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Deontae Lawson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Oronde Gadsden II at pick No. 143. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cody Simon in the 217th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Nicholas Singleton at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Seth McLaughlin in pick 241 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
