Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kalel Mullings got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 220th overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Sanders to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Matthew Golden went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 6. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Dylan Fairchild was the payoff at No. 69. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Ozzy Trapilo at the 90th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They did well to land Elic Ayomanor in the 100th pick, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Barrett Carter at pick No. 104 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A wild overpay on Shilo Sanders in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Cody Simon at slot 217 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Taking Kalel Mullings in Round 7, Pick 4 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Gentry Williams in No. 238 says they were not listening. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
