You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Bryce Foster in pick No. 209. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Landing Hurst that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 19 they get a featured back, outstanding value to boot.
Anthony Hill Jr. at the Round 2 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Emmanuel Pregnon slipping to slot 50 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Lee Hunter in Round 3, Pick 1. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kamari Ramsey in pick 92 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy bit of business in the 104th pick, where Logan Jones graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ted Hurst in pick No. 112 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nate Boerkircher at slot 152 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Isaiah World, who had no business lasting to pick 163. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ephesians Prysock in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on VJ Payne at the 183rd overall pick that the board grades a round light. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board had cheaper options than Jalen Stroman at No. 187, and it noticed. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Bryce Foster at Round 6, Pick 28 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on TJ Hall. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
