Dallas Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D+.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent the 211th overall pick on Barryn Sorrell, a name the board had a full 101 spots lower.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Phillips. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, L'Jarius Sneed leading the way.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
Emeka Egbuka in the 35th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.20 · Pick 84 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 57
Elic Ayomanor at the 84th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.18 · Pick 119 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 99
Cam Skattebo at Round 4, Pick 18 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.19 · Pick 120 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 87
The board fumbled Andrew Mukuba all the way to slot 120, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Jordan Phillips · DT · rank 109
Jordan Phillips in pick No. 150 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 129
They barely believed it either: Cody Simon still on the board at Round 5, Pick 31. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Logan Brown · OT · rank 144
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.35 · Pick 174 · Ty Robinson · DL · rank 157
Ty Robinson at pick 174 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · Hayden Conner · OG · rank 209
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in No. 190 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.33 · Pick 211 · Barryn Sorrell · LB-EDGE · rank 312
A wild overpay on Barryn Sorrell in the 211th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Tonka Hemingway · DT · rank 251
No edge and no loss on Tonka Hemingway in pick No. 249; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
