The real work happened on the phones. The Commanders fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Bethune has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Jordan at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Ryan Tannehill pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Bottom line, with Amarius Mims leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.10
· Pick 10
· Amarius Mims
· OT
· rank 22
In No. 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Tyler Guyton
· OT
· rank 40
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 36
Xavier Legette at pick No. 38 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Bralen Trice
· DE-EDGE
· rank 37
Fair-plus on Bralen Trice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 82
A reach on Mike Sainristil in the 67th pick; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.8
· Pick 72
· Sedrick Van Pran
· C
· rank 90
Sedrick Van Pran in Round 3, Pick 8 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Marshawn Kneeland
· DE-EDGE
· rank 104
Marshawn Kneeland in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 127
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 102 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.6
· Pick 106
· Cole Bishop
· S
· rank 129
A wild overpay on Cole Bishop in Round 4, Pick 6, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.5
· Pick 141
· Jaylen Wright
· RB
· rank 158
Jaylen Wright in pick 141 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.6
· Pick 181
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 197
A reach for Christian Jones in the 181st overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.3
· Pick 223
· Tatum Bethune
· LB
· rank 254
Value said wait; Tatum Bethune in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.9
· Pick 229
· Jawhar Jordan
· RB
· rank 209
A running back of that caliber at slot 229 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
