If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Trente Jones at the 182nd pick is 70 spots clear of where he belonged. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. Getting Still where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early.
Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 2 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Blake Corum at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaheim Bell in No. 90, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in slot 104 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They did well to land Cole Bishop in Round 4, Pick 36, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trente Jones this early at pick No. 182. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Frank Gore Jr. slipping to slot 188 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tarheeb Still at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
