You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Tommy Mellott in the 238th pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Landing Campbell that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a blindside protector at fair value.
A reach on Trey Amos in the 38th pick; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Isaiah Bond slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into David Bailey at the 77th overall pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jihaad Campbell in slot 104 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garrett Dellinger at pick No. 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Thor Griffith in No. 220 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tommy Mellott in the 238th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
