Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chiefs spent Round 4, Pick 31 on Dont'e Thornton Jr., a name the board had a full 45 spots lower. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Knight Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Mukuba pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Xavier Watts at pick 64 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Andrew Mukuba with tight end, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Taking Demetrius Knight Jr. in slot 96 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 132nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
