Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Zy Alexander got past him. The Chiefs do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot.
The Chiefs indulged a want in Barron while a need in wide receiver, tight end and other spots stayed open. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
They went 2 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Travis Hunter in the 31st overall pick, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay Tate Ratledge at pick 63 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Wyatt Milum in pick No. 68 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Walter Nolen in No. 97 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jahdae Barron while clear needs at wide receiver, tight end and other spots sat open.
They barely believed it either: Zy Alexander still on the board at slot 255. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
