The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 112 on Mason Reiger a full 38 spots early.
Caldwell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 28 they get the heartbeat of the defense at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Anthony Hill Jr. at Round 2, Pick 27 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Zakee Wheatley at par in pick 92, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason Reiger well ahead of where he belonged. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in the 152nd pick, where Amare Thomas graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kage Casey at No. 177. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Ephesians Prysock was the payoff at slot 205. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dallen Bentley in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Jeff Caldwell in the 218th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
