There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Dolphins started one anyway for Blake Watson, 47 picks ahead of schedule.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jones.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 23, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Ruke Orhorhoro enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 55. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Christian Mahogany, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jarrian Jones at Round 5, Pick 22 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Value said wait; Cedric Johnson in pick 184 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Logan Lee at the Round 6 slot, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Blake Watson at Round 7, Pick 21, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
