The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That Wallace pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Wiley has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
They took Adonai Mitchell at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Troy Franklin at pick 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kingsley Suamataia slipping to Round 3, Pick 4 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Caelen Carson is a better player than No. 103 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reach for Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 137; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cornelius Johnson at the 180th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Jared Wiley in slot 193, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Caedan Wallace in pick No. 231 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
