Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kyle Monangai got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 238th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The Wilson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Luther Burden III at the 14th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Josh Conerly Jr. in pick 38, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Nick Emmanwori in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Ozzy Trapilo enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 69. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wilson in slot 77, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Phillips at Round 4, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Luke Kandra at No. 144 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tahj Brooks in the 217th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 220th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid up for Thomas Fidone II at pick 232 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Kyle Monangai at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
