There was a run on nobody at that position, and the 49ers started one anyway for VJ Payne, 45 picks ahead of schedule. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Muhammad. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dani Dennis-Sutton in the 58th pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Malik Muhammad in pick No. 127 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No drama and no debate, Oscar Delp went about where he belonged in pick 133. A need, and now a little less of one.
Chris McClellan at slot 138 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Isaiah World at No. 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Beau Stephens at Round 5, Pick 2 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Moore at the 144th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Kaytron Allen at pick 146, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, VJ Payne in slot 149 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
