The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They banked enough surplus on Simpson to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 34 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 68 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kamren Kinchens in pick No. 103, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Will Shipley at Round 5, Pick 1 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylin Simpson at the 180th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Trente Jones at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Tanner McLachlan still on the board at slot 231. It fills a real need, too.
