This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Payton Wilson, the No. 57 name on the board, stolen at the 88th overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Adisa Isaac at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 60, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
You do not let a linebacker like Payton Wilson reach the 88th pick and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nothing to complain about; Dadrion Taylor-Demerson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Taking Will Shipley in No. 126 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Michael Pratt at slot 163 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nehemiah Pritchett in the 169th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tanner McLachlan at slot 202 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Ryan Flournoy slipping to the 219th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the 245th overall pick, with Tylan Grable worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
They let Edefuan Ulofoshio come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Tyler Owens at Round 7, Pick 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
