There is reaching, and then there is Ricky White III at pick 122. The Cowboys jumped the board by 64 and dared it to prove them wrong. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Shedeur Sanders that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. However the rest shakes out, Ransom at that price is a win they earned.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 8 they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 17th overall pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Ashton Gillotte at slot 24 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Ajani Cornelius in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tyleik Williams at pick No. 49 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Parker Brailsford in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ricky White III in pick 122 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Thor Griffith. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A safety of that caliber at the 186th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
