There is reaching, and then there is Logan Brown at slot 89. The Texans jumped the board by 64 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Texans indulged a want in Mukuba while a need in edge rusher and quarterback stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Carter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 10, with Tre Harris worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Omarion Hampton in No. 56, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Tyler Warren was the payoff at the 58th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Deone Walker in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Logan Brown at pick 89, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and quarterback to take Andrew Mukuba, a safety that was not the priority.
Somehow Barrett Carter was still sitting there in pick No. 126, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Samuel Brown at pick 164 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jonah Monheim at No. 241 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
