Boards are made to be trusted, and the Commanders shredded theirs for Jared Wiley. He came off 69 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On value alone, Mims makes the weekend a net positive. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Amarius Mims at No. 36. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 8, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A wild overpay on Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on J. Michael Sturdivant at the 100th pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Melton a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Cole Bishop, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jawhar Jordan this early at slot 181. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wiley in the 223rd pick, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
